Congratulations
to the Hayes Wrestlers on their 10th place finish at a very tough
Hayes Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Standouts for the Pacers
were junior Greg Flaglor (2nd at 119lbs.) and senior Nate Hauff
(3rd at 145lbs.). Also, after not placing in his pool bracket, Sophomore
Jacob Naegele finished strong with three straight wins in the consolation
pool. Nice Job fellas! The Pacers will host Marysville in an OCC
dual this Thursday. We will honor our three seniors: Nate Hauff,
Josh Denny, and Trevyn Hubbs. On Saturday, the JV will travel to
Westerville North for the Jon Post tournament. On Sunday, the coaching
staff would like to invite all who are interested to attend the
Ohio State/Michigan dual in Columbus. Coaches will pay for all wrestlers
and parents who worked the tournament this Saturday. Go Pacers!

Congratulations to our
Potential Reacher Honorees
Congratulations to Hayes Wrestlers Mark Rieman and Nick Spalsbury who were two
of just thirteen students honored at this morning's Potential Reacher's Induction
Banquet! Mark and Nick should both be commended as that this is a very, very
elite honor. To be considered for this honor, a teacher had to write to a committee
on behalf of his/her nominee explaining why, above other very worthy students,
the nominated individual deserved to be recognized for his potential reaching
efforts and his leadership qualities. Then, each nomination write-up was considered
by a committee, candidates were discussed and scrutinized, and the thirteen were
selected. Thank you to Mark and Nick for their good efforts and the positive
distinction they have brought to themselves, their families, their school, and
the Hayes Wrestling Team. Keep up the good work!

Hello Parents, Athletes, and Hayes Wrestling fans! Congratulations on a
great year and an even brighter future. Our summer wrestling schedule is packed. So mark the following notes on your
calendars:
The Bigger, Faster, Stronger strength and conditioning workouts will
conclude for the spring after tomorrow's workout. Athletes will be given a week off of lifting during finals week. Rest and
recuperate. The attendance and commitment has been tremendous; let's keep it that way.
Athletes: be ready to make huge strength gains over the summer starting on
June 11th at 8am. All wrestlers are expected to attend. We will lift every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning
throughout the summer until otherwise noted.
The Columbus Wrestling League begins it's off-season matches on June 5th,
next Tuesday night at 6pm at New Albany High School. This is an informal way for area wrestlers to get in a ton of
matches and experience. It is a free event where guys can get in 3-5 officiated matches each
night. Wrestlers should see coach Heffernan for Information and waiver forms.
WRESTLERS MUST BRING A SIGNED WAIVER FORM IN ORDER TO COMPETE. Talk with your teammates;
carpools are forming. Small donations for officiating is encouraged. Click
here for more information. Click
here for the Wrestling Waiver.
The Delaware Summer Wrestling Camp will begin June 18th at 11am after our
morning lift. More campers are registering every day. High school Wrestlers are expected to act as technique
coaches for this camp. Proceeds will lessen the cost of the Ohio University Camp.
Click here for more information and a printable registration form.
The Ohio University Competition Camp is also quickly approaching. I need to send Coach Greenlee
registration forms and money by June 15. He has lessened the cost for us down to $275 a camper
for the week long overnight camp from July 9th through 12th. I will collect that amount along with
the registration forms starting next week and send it all out together to him on June 15th. Then,
once we finalize numbers and funds from our Delaware Summer Camp, I will reimburse those
wrestlers attending the Ohio camp accordingly. Click here for more information and a printable registration form.
Work Hard! -Coach Heffernan

A Nutritional Note:
Nutrition is vital when doing any sort of strength
training. It is almost as important to making gains as the actual lifting and cardio training. It would be a good idea to carry some sort of
sustenance to get into your system right after school, just before the workout begins. I suggest a piece of
fruit--an apple, orange, or banana--or a granola/protein bar. Perhaps a half turkey sandwich. (Do
not gorge yourself! A full or bloated belly will be counterproductive). Your body will need the
fuel...we will be burning calories as well as building muscle. Also, it would be a good idea to get
some more recovery-type sustenance in your system directly after the workout--a protein shake, a
can of tuna, or that other half of that turkey sandwich. Your muscles will be craving the protein
from these items (as well as water and/or Gatorade) in order to recover and grow properly. Thus it
is important to give your muscles this needed boost of protein within an hour of your workout.

SAVE THE DATES!
We are currently planning our end-of-the-season banquet. Tentatively, we are looking at the
evenings of either March 20, 21, or 22 (mid-week nights the week before Spring Break). The
tentative location is the Old Bag of Nails restaurant in Delaware. Winter sports honors and
awards will be presented then. We are planning on taking the team to Ohio University's
competition camp in Athens, Ohio from July 9-July 12. All wrestlers attending will receive
4 days of top-notch technique instruction and 15-20 matches. Prices and more information TBA.
CALL FOR ALL GEAR!
Coach Heffernan is collecting all wrestling gear this week--singlets, warm-up tops, and warm up
bottoms. PLEASE help get all singlets and gear to him for inventory and budgeting purposes. AND
bring them washed! Wrestlers can drop them off in his classroom, #2103, during
the school day. All winter sports awards, numerals, and letters, will be held for ransom, until gear is handed in. If
wrestlers need headgear or singlets for spring and summer wrestling, they must resign them out
from coach. (This call is also for gear issued in previous years that individuals did not buy.)
UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS!
Keep competing during the spring and summer! Gain experience and confidence! Winter champions
are made in the spring and summer and there are a ton of open tournaments in the area where
guys can get in a whole season's worth of matches. Keep abreast of these tournament dates by
bookmarking this site: http://www.ohiowrestler.com/OW_07_Youth_Tourney.htm#bar.
Northmor, Westerville North, Big Walnut, St. Charles, and Westland all host solid tournaments this month.
SPRING STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING!
After our month-long break, all wrestlers not currently competing with a spring sport will be
required to lift weights after school with BFS every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
beginning April 9th after school from 3-4:15pm. We will also host one night of open mats per week, which
will be required as well. The time for that is TBA. Wrestlers are also encouraged to compete in
weekend tournaments and train in other area open rooms and camps (like Monster
Squad and the Cardinal Wrestling Club) throughout the spring and summer.
These are places where the area's best wrestlers meet to have fun, improve
their technique, and get some great competition in the off-season. There are many very worthy ways to improve. Take advantage of as many as you
can! Coach Heffernan has information in his room.

Congratulations to those individuals who wrestled in the Hayes Invitational. It was a "grinder," a very tough day of Wrestling. I'm proud of how each wrestler competed and finished the day. Each of them had to wrestle with a number of demons other than some extremely tough opponents - soreness, fatigue, and doubt. Each conquered those demons. It is to be commended.
Thank You to everyone who helped out at the Hayes Invitational on 02.03.07 - parents, coaches, fans, friends, and JV Wrestlers. Your effort was awesome and very beneficial for those who were participating. It is
easily the best tournament on our schedule and I know the other teams feel the same way.
A special mention to Tony Rieman on his efforts to organize and run all three of our yearly tournaments. I am amazed at the hours he puts in year round to make sure the tournaments get started promptly and run smoothly. His efforts and
commitment toward these tournaments really put Delaware on the map of the Ohio wrestling community. It is a true luxury for all of us involved with Delaware Wrestling and something that will surely help improve our program. Thank you, Tony.
JV Note: The 02.03.07 Jon Post Tournament at Westerville North HS marks the end of the JV season. On Monday, All JVs who are not practice partners of varsity Wrestlers need to turn in their gear (Singlets and Warm Ups) at the beginning of practice. All JV's, even those who aren't practice partners to varsity Wrestlers, are welcome to continue practicing with the varsity as they head into the tournament part of the season, but they are not required to.
Varsity Note: I went to our Sectional Seeding Meeting on 02.04.07 (for team pairings, individual seeding will happen next weekend). Our OHSAA Sectional Tournament will be held February 13th at Dublin Coffman High School. Participating teams are Dublin Coffman, Thomas Worthington, Hilliard Davidson, Columbus West, Olentangy Liberty, Dublin Jerome, Westerville South, Whetstone, Marion Franklin, Delaware Hayes, Worthington
Kilbourne, Upper Arlington, and Mt. Vernon. For more information, you can check out
cdab.org. Individuals who place in the top four of this tournament will advance to the OHSAA District Wrestling Tournament the following weekend at Hilliard Darby HS. There, the top four finishers will advance to the state tournament.
The varsity's season ends after the OHSAA District Tournament for all Wrestlers except state qualifiers and their practice partners. Wrestlers who do not qualify for the state tournament need to hand in their gear on Monday Tuesday, February 20th.
All Wrestlers: As for the Spring season, I strongly encourage all Wrestlers to participate in other
sports. In the spring, Hayes offers Baseball and Track. For those not involved in a Spring sport,
you will be required to lift with the team through the Spring on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays after school (with Football and the BFS program) and attend our weekly open mat night.
Coach Masi (the Head Football Coach) and I are working together to make sure our shared
athletes are getting what they need in terms of lifting and off-season training without any
conflicts. This "no conflict" plan should last the summer as well.
After the State Tournament, all wrestlers will be "OFF" until April 9th, when we will begin our off-season workouts. The plan as of now is, starting on April 9th, we will lift three days a week, have one evening of open mats (which evening is TBA), and participate in Spring and Summer freestyle/folkstyle/and Greco-Roman tournaments. This will give those who desire it, the opportunity to go to some other "open mat" nights and evening training camps during the Spring as well. The coaches are in the process of scheduling two team camps to attend this summer (At a team camp, not only do wrestlers get a week's worth of intensive technique training, but also they'll get in 15-20 matches as well, that is a WHOLE season's worth of matches). We will also host a two-week long "kids" camp for Team Cobra Wrestlers in the summer. We will gain tremendous experience, confidence, and strength as a team during the off season. All that is needed is commitment. |

Sectional Note:
Congratulations to senior Dylan Campbell who finished 6th at the OHSAA Central District Tournament this past Saturday! Dylan was just a match shy of earning a trip down state and finished his season with a record of
29-13. He competed well in an extremely tough 145 pound division, which is certain to boast a few state place winners. Senior Nate Cornell (130 lbs.), and sophomores Greg Flaglor (119 lbs.) and Christion Brooks (171 lbs.) also qualified for the district tournament and wrestled well.

Pacer Weekly Awards - Week Eleven (Feb. 12th-Feb. 18th)
OHSAA Sectional Week
Wrestler of the Week: Greg Flaglor (so., 119) Greg, unseeded going into
the tournament, placed fourth at the sectional tournament and, thus, advanced to the District tournament. In one of his better performances of
the year, Greg gained ground losing a 7-0 decision to a very tough wrestler from Thomas Worthington, Alex
Radsky, who teched him in their previous meeting.
Practice Wrestler of the Week: Joey Sumner (fr.) Joey was around all
week, even though his season was over, to help the varsity guys around him
prepare for sectionals.
Senior/Junior Performance of the Week: Nate Cornell (l 30) had a very
dominating performance against his first round opponent from Dublin Jerome.
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Brent Spivey (112) Brent pinned an
extremely tough opponent from Dublin Coffman, Loren Pace, the second seed,
who only had four losses on the year and put himself in a position to advance on to the sectional tournament.
Most Pins: Brent Spivey, Greg Flaglor, Nate Cornell, and Dylan Campbell
all had 2 pins
Most Takedowns: Greg Flaglor, Nate Cornell and Mark Rieman all had 9
takedowns
Quickest Pin: Nate Cornell pinned Rhinehardt of Dublin Jerome in 1:49
Pacer Weekly Awards - Week Ten (Feb. 5th-Feb. 11th)
Wrestler of the Week: James Stevens 285 (so.) James was the JV’s lone
placer in a tough Jon Post Tournament at Westerville North. He took 6th and recorded two pins. James has made steady improvement all season and
will compete this weekend with the varsity at the sectional tournament at Dublin Coffman.
Practice Wrestler of the Week: Dylan Campbell (145, Sr.) It is hard not
to notice Dylan at practice. Yes, he is extremely vocal, but also he is hard-working and very competitive. Rarely does he ever finish second in a
sprint or any cardio work. Since January, Dylan’s practice ethic has a sense of urgency; it is evident, through his practice room demeanor, that
he doesn’t want his season to end prematurely now that it is in the tournament phase of the season.
Senior/Junior Performance of the Week: Josh Denny l 52 (jr. ) One of the
best stats from this weekend’s Jon Post Tournament was the fact that every
JV wrestler competing won at least one match. Josh was one of those guys who has been working diligently and consistently, but who had yet to see
the results of his efforts register a win. Well, they did on Saturday…great job, Josh!
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Nik Oesterle 145 (so.) Nik was the
wrestler who the coaches noticed in the first few rounds of the Jon Post Tourney. Nik is a very capable wrestler who has learned how to compete
this year and the importance of wrestling a full six minutes, even in a losing situation. It is a tough lesson, one weaker-mided athletes might
try to avoid. Nik faced his challenges this year head on. His toughness this year is sure to benefit Nik in the future.
Freshman Performance of the Week: Mike Kalista (125, fr.) Mike had a
very dominate win over his opponent from Westerville Central on Saturday.
Mike has learned two very important lessons this year: 1. The importance of managing his weight effectively and 2. The importance of practicing
perfectly. These lessons learned gave him success in his final tournament
and are sure to benefit him in his spring and summer wrestling endeavors.

Pacer Weekly Awards - Week Nine (Jan.
29th-Feb. 4th)
Wrestler of the Week:
Brent Spivey 112 (so.) Brent finished the regular season this weekend by
placing 6th in a very tough Delaware Hayes Invitational Tournament. He is
one of our Team's most improved Wrestlers. In 2006 (the first half
of our season), Brent’s record was 5-15. Since the new year, he has gone
11-4 and has significantly improved in every statistical category. It is
quite a turnaround. Brent is sure to stir some things up come the
post-season.
Practice Wrestler of the Week:
Evan Bull 171 (fr.) Though there are many wrestlers who deserve to be
commended in this category, Evan has been standing out as a selfless
teammate, someone who puts the importance of the Team far above his own
needs and desires. He is a tremendous worker in the practice room and is
very dependable when it comes to the “not-so-glorious” duties all
wrestlers have to endure, like mat moving, tournament jobs, and mat
mopping. He does far beyond his share all the time. It is a great attitude
to have and creates a positive environment. Good work, Evan!
Senior/Junior Performance of the Week: Dylan Campbell 145 (sr.) and
Adam Haser 140 (sr.)
Both of these seniors pulled in big wins on senior night in their matches
against Central Crossing. Adam pinned his opponent and Dylan earned a
major decision.
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Nik Oesterle 145/152 Nik plays a
very important and often unnoticed role on our team. He is the “extra”
man, stuck in a back-up role behind two very tough Wrestlers. As a result,
and in conjunction with his work ethic, toughness, and commitment, I often
find a way to get him in the varsity line-up, often putting him up a
weight class. Nik never complains and always goes out to the mat and does
his best. He has not found a lot of success in terms of wins and losses on
the varsity - yet. But he has improved over the year, he has gotten
significant experience, and his commitment and positive attitude has never
wavered. With a continued commitment and effort, Nik is sure to be getting
more of those wins on varsity next year.
Freshman Performance of the Week: Joey Sumner 135 Coaches describe
Joey as a “tough kid.” And to prove it, on Thursday night, he had two
matches against two solid Central Crossing wrestlers with not a lot of
rest in between. Joey did not look for an excuse as to why he might be at
a disadvantage, instead he pinned both opponents.
Most Takedowns: Nate Cornell 130 (sr.) and Christion Brooks 171
(so.) had 8 takedowns this weekend.
Most Pins: Adam Haser (sr.) had 3.
Quickest Pin: Nate Cornell (sr.) pinned Darst of Hamilton Township
in :43 seconds.
Extra Effort Award: The parents, grandparents, coaches, young
wrestlers, and fans who dedicated their time and money to the Hayes
Invitational. Thank you so much for your generosity and hard work.

Pacer Weekly Awards - Week Eight (Jan. 22nd-28th)
Wrestler of the Week: Greg Flaglor 119 (so.) Greg slammed the door on a
great week of wrestling by winning his championship match at the Worthington Christian tournament with a pin. Greg personifies tenacity on
the mat with his never-give-up attitude and he regularly finds ways to upset highly touted opponents. This mentality is a definite advantage as
we head to the post-season. Great job, Greg!
Practice Wrestler of the Week: Evan Welsh 171/189 (so.) Evan made a
choice, which began in the practice room, this week to turn his season around. He increased his intensity, trusted the technique being taught to
him, and made the decision to quit spending so much time on bottom. Consequently, he won 5 of his 8 matches this weekend, and at one point, he
racked up four pins in a row.
Senior/Junior Performance of the Week: Dylan Campbell 145 (sr. ) had
another impressive 1st period technical fall over J. Robinette from Bishop
Ready in his first match at the Worthington Christian Tournament.
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Brent Spivey 112 Brent is another who
has turned his season around. Brent was 5-14 in 2006. Since the New Year, he is 8-1. He has improved in all phases of his wrestling; this was
shown in his match versus Max Hanna of Thomas Worthington where Brent turned close match (a 2-point first period lead) into a fall in 5:14.
Freshman Performance of the Week: Nick Spalsbury 189 Nick has the
unfortunate luck of wrestling with guys like Evan Welsh, Christion Brooks,
Todd Munday, and Evan Bull all week in practice. Having that sort of challenge each day is enough to make some guys crumble. Nick doesn’t. He
knows it is a great opportunity that will help him get better. He’s been
reliable and consistently improving. He took third this week at the Newark JV tournament and, with a continued effort, is sure to be fighting
for a varsity position in the near future.
Most Pins: Evan Welsh had 4 on the weekend.
Most Takedowns: Nate Cornell 130 (sr.) had 17 takedowns this weekend, the
most in a weekend yet.
Quickest Pin: Dylan Campbell 145 (sr.) pinned S. Busby of Columbus East
in :29 seconds.

Pacer Weekly Awards - Week Six (Jan. 8-Jan. 14)
Wrestler of the Week: Mark Rieman 135 lbs. (so.) Mark stretched his
record to 15-8 and placed 2nd at the Porter Memorial Tournament at Hilliard Darby this weekend. Mark has been wrestling solidly all year.
This was the first (but certainly not the last) finals appearance for Mark
in his varsity wrestling career.
Practice Wrestler of the Week: Greg Flaglor 119 (so.) Greg's efforts in
the practice room helped him to save team points against two very talented
opponents from Teays Valley and Pickerington North. Also, Greg's attention
to his technique, specifically his defense to leg riders, earned him a pin
in an exciting match at the Porter memorial Tournament.
Senior/Junior Performance of the Week: Adam Haser 140 (sr. ) Adam went
2-0 during Thursday night's tri against Pickerington North and Teays Valley, and evened his overall record up to .500 by the end of the weekend.
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Brent Spivey 112 (so.) By preparing
and competing with tremendous heart, Brent, like Greg, stole points from both Pickerington North and Teays Valley on Thursday night; both schools
were surely counting on earning big points from their solid wrestlers in his weight class. However, more notable, was Brent's performance at the
Porter Memorial Tournament, where he recorded 2 pins and took 4th place.
Most Pins: Brent Spivey, Dylan Campbell, and Greg Flaglor all had 2 pins
on the week.
Most Takedowns: Dylan Campbell had 9 takedowns this past week.

(fr.) Coach Rieman and Coach Trimble raved about Derek’s performance at the Hilliard Darby JV dual.
“Derek did everything we’ve been teaching in the room,” remarked Coach
Rieman. “His technique, specifically on top, was flawless and he destroyed a pretty tough wrestler.”
Practice Wrestler of the Week: Brent Spivey 112 (so.) Brent has made a
noticeable improvement in his practice wrestling. No longer is he simply going through the motions of the day-to-day grind. He is becoming a
student of the sport and this change is sure to result in more success on the mat.
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Shayne Perry 189 (so.)
Freshman Performance of the Week: Derek Eastburn 140 (fr.)
Pacer Weekly Awards - Week Four (Dec. 25th-31st)

Wrestler of the Week: Mark Rieman (135, so.)
Winning both of his dual meet matches and placing 3rd at the Firebird Classic, Mark extended his record
to 9-4 this week. He is also the team leader in takedowns with 21. Though still very young, coaches characterize Mark as a "very solid
technical wrestler" who epitomizes the work ethic and commitment the sport
demands.
Senior/Junior Performance of the Week: Dylan Campbell (145)
After dominating his pool at the Firebird Classic, Dylan pinned Tyler Smith from
Kettering Fairmont in the championship match in just :45 seconds.
Sophomore Performance of the Week: Greg Flaglor (119)
For the second week in a row, Greg gave his team inspiring performances.
He actually had a few his week, but the one that stands out is his victory during the Marysville dual. After falling behind early in his
match against Tyler Wirtz, Greg tenaciously kept on competing. In the final seconds, Greg put Wirtz on his back and earned an 11-8 victory.
Freshman Performance of the Week: Todd Munday (285)
In his first match at the Firebird Classic, Todd was paired up against the
number one seed, Josh Adams from Vandalia-Butler who placed highly at last
week's Wazie Invitatonal. Adams put Todd on his back early and looked well on his way to earning a quick win. However, Todd avoided the pin and
fought off his back for nearly the whole period. In the second period, Adams put Todd on his back again; however, this time, Todd did more than
simply fight off his back. He reversed Adams and pinned him.
Most Pins: Dylan Campbell (145, sr.) had three pins this week.
Most Takedowns: Mark Rieman (135, so.) had 9 this week.
Practice Partner of the Week: Joey Sumner (140, fr.) and Greg Flaglor
(119, so.)
Fastest Fall: Nate Cornell (130, sr.) pinned Jordan Wells of
Dayton-Stebbins in :20 seconds.
