DHHS Hall of Fame Inductees


Alan Wood – Distinguished Service Award
A three sport athlete at Payne High School in Football, Basketball and
Baseball while winning 11 letters led Al to a continued love for athletics. With this background Al became a special volunteer
at Hayes High School giving time to work on both Baseball and Softball fields. This dedication along
with Jerry Fouts and the Dugout Club led to the Baseball diamond carrying his name
Fouts-Wood Field. “We could have rain in the morning and be ready to play at days end because of Al’s hard
work,” says Kevin Reed, Hayes Athletic Director. Al is a Delaware Hayes Athletic Department Special
Volunteer.

Tom Ackley – Distinguished Service Award (Willis High School)
Tom is remembered for his hard work as a booster who organized a group of carpenters to build
concession stands at Community Field. Coach Jerry Cornell remembers Tom as an organizer who got
things done, like selling bricks at $1.00 a piece to buy team uniforms. (Accepted
by Mr. Ackley's son)

Jean-Marc Cowles O’Connor - Athlete
“Defense” is the name of the game for Jean-Marc Cowles who earned Defensive Player of the Year
in 1983 as the goalie of the Soccer Team. During the 1983 season he had 176 saves (a school
record) as well as 26 saves in one game. He also claims a record of 3 shut-outs in one season.
Jean-Marc found time to excel in Gymnastics, qualifying for the state tournament in 1982, and in
Track and Field where he qualified in the 3200 meter run for Regionals.

Stacey Ungashick Reed – Athlete
A graduate of Hayes in 1989, Stacey is a four-year letter winner in
Basketball and Volleyball. She earned her first year letters at Canton Central Catholic and finished her remaining three years at
Hayes. Stacey was co-captain of both sports her junior and senior years and earned OCC, District,
and All Ohio honors in both sports. She coached Basketball and Volleyball at Hayes until recently she
joined the staff at Ohio Wesleyan University, coaching Women’s Basketball.


Ed Starling – Athlete and Coach
In 1962-1963, Ed Starling was honored as All CBL center on the Hayes
Football Team. During that time he lettered in Baseball three years. From 1969-1980 he returned to Hayes as
Head Baseball Coach and an Assistant Coach in Football for 10 years. During his tenure, the
Baseball Team won its first District Championship in 1976. Ed’s lifetime career wins in
Baseball is 536 including his more recent years of coaching at Marysville High School.

Dave Echols – Coach and Administrator
Dave Echols came to Hayes as a coaching assistant in Basketball and Baseball in 1973 after serving
as Head Baseball Coach in Arlington, Ohio. Dave was a counselor, dedicated to serving the students
of Hayes High School. His desire to serve and his love of athletics led him to become a full time
assistant in the Athletic Department as Faculty Manager in 1993. He served in this position until his
retirement in 2002. Dave not only was a tournament site manager for many OHSAA Tournaments but
found time to be a registered official in Basketball, Baseball and Softball for 15 years. His “behind the
scenes” work made him a strong contribution to the Athletic Department.

Len Visci – Coach and Administrator (Willis High School)
Len Visci was an outstanding coach and school administrator at Delaware Willis from 1948 to 1960.
He was kept busy coaching Football, Basketball, Baseball and Golf, and served as Assistant Principal
and teacher of science and history. As Football Assistant Coach the Team was CBL Champs in 1951
and 1954. The 1951 Championship was the first league title in the history of Willis. He was head
coach in Basketball of the CBL Champs in 1951. In Baseball he led the team to CBL championships in
1954 and again in 1955. His dedication to the Willis students and his philosophy of fundamentals and
discipline makes him remembered by all of his players. Coach Visci passed away, January 22, 2005.

Terry Kramer – Distinguished Service Award
“Terry is always ready to help when and where needed” said AD Kevin Reed. Helping the Boys and Girls Track
Teams from 1980-1999 in the Shot and Discus and mentoring in the weight room are some of the volunteer support Kramer has given to Hayes
Athletes. Terry and his wife, Sandy a retired kindergarten teacher for Delaware City Schools are supporters of the Hayes Boosters and have donated weight room and track equipment. Kramer was chosen the Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year” in 2005.
Frank Dalton – Coach
Frank coached Girls Basketball at Hayes from 1980 to 1999. His teams were Ohio Capital
Conference champions four times, sectional champs 13 seasons and two-times district champs. Dalton has won numerous coaching titles including “Coach of the Year” in conference and district play nine times and Ohio High School Coach of the year in 1995 and 1996. Coach Dalton is presently coaching
Basketball for Fort Collins, Colorado High School.
Travis Dalton – Athlete
A graduate of Hayes in 1989, Travis was a stand-out in Golf and Basketball, lettering all four years in each sport. He received all league honors in
Golf, being selected in his senior year as an all Ohio Golfer—to play in the top 10 OHSAA Championship. He was also all OCC in
Basketball and all district 2 years. He set the school record of 1071 career points.
Kris Leslie – Athlete
Rev. Kristen J. Leslie, PH.D. is now Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling at Yale University Divinity School. A Hayes graduate of 1979, she was a four year letter winner in three sports:
Volleyball, Basketball and Track. She earned three all league awards in both
Volleyball and Basketball and UPI and AP state of Ohio honorable mention in
Basketball.
John Talley – Athlete
In 1956, graduating from Willis High School, John Talley received a four year
Football scholarship to Northwestern University where he quarterbacked and received many honors. While at Willis he lettered four years in
Baseball, three in Basketball and three in Football. Baseball honors include all Central Buckeye League, pitching three no hitters and one perfect game. In
Basketball, he was all CBL, first team and in Football all CBL first team quarterback.
Ralph Young – Athletic Director
While at Hayes from 1980-1990, Ralph received local, state, and national honors as an Athletic Director. He was inducted into three high school Halls of Fame, Strongsville, Upper Sandusky, and Granville High Schools. He is also in the OCC Hall of Fame and received the OHSAA Naismith Meritorious Basketball Award. He has a Citation from the National Federation of High School Athletics and a Distinguished Service award from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators. He is in the Officials Hall of Fame as a 35 year
Track and Field official. Ralph organized the Delaware Hayes Hall of Fame in 2000.

Jim Hoffman - Distinguished Service
Jim volunteers as a supervisor of the Baseball and Softball fields at Hayes.
He graduated from St. Mary High School where he played four years of Basketball and one year of Baseball. His pride and dedication to his work on
the ball fields gives our teams the message to “Play Ball.”

Don Lockwood - Coach 1974 through 1992
Don Lockwood was the Golf coach at Hayes for 18 years. He spent 32 years teaching in public schools and 36 years coaching including 4 years as Golf
coach at Ohio Wesleyan. Don is presently a pastor in the United Methodist Church.

Bill Middleton - Hayes Class of 1968
Wrestling, Baseball, and Football were Bill’s sports in which he earned 10
varsity letters during his career at Hayes. He captained the Wrestling and Baseball Teams and was Conference and Sectional Champion in Wrestling.

Frank Montgomery - Hayes Class of 1962
Frank played Football, Basketball and Track all four years. He earned four letters in Track, qualifying twice for the State Meet in the Discus. He earned
three letters in Football and was selected All Conference his junior and senior years. He was captain in all three sports.

Marge Moses - Coach 1972 through 1980, Hayes Class of 1966
Marge graduated from Hayes in 1966 and came back to coach Girls’ Basketball in 1972. In 1977-78 her team was District Runner-up as well as
Conference and Sectional Champs. Marge also coached Softball, Field hockey and was Cheerleading Advisor.

Fred Terry - Willis class of 1955
Fred lettered in Football, Basketball and Baseball during his years at Willis
High School. He earned honors in all three sports: First team quarterback and All League, CBL in Football; Most Valuable Player and All League in
Basketball; and First Team All League and captain in Baseball
